Estrogenic compounds in the environment disturb the hormonal balance of organisms by imitating the naturally occurring estrogens. They can affect the development, reproduction and health of animals and humans.
Last year, three bioassays for the highly sensitive detection of these substances were standardised, including the yeast cell estrogen screen with lyticase (L-YES), which the Ecotox Centre uses on a regular basis. The gene for the human estrogen receptor is coupled with a so-called reporter gene and incorporated into genetically modified yeast cells. If an estrogenic compound binds to the estrogen receptor, a colour reaction is triggered. More details on the test procedure can be found in the video tutorial
