Successful dissertation
We congratulate Ali Kizgin on the successful defence of his dissertation. Over the past four years, Ali has been researching at the Ecotox Centre a key challenge in wastewater management - namely the early detection of pollution events using online biomonitoring.
Treated wastewater can be continuously monitored using online monitoring with organisms. This gives wastewater treatment plant operators and industrial dischargers the opportunity to react quickly to acute pollution. This ensures consistently high water quality and prevents accidents with long-term consequences for people and the environment.
Ali has applied several test systems with algae, water fleas and freshwater amphipods to both municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants, thus significantly advancing the use of biomonitors for monitoring treated wastewater. Currently, such systems are mainly used to monitor drinking water and surface water, but there was still little experience in applying them to wastewater treatment plants.
Ali's doctoral thesis was supervised by Prof. Juliane Hollender from Eawag/ETH Zurich, co-supervisors were Prof Eberhard Morgenroth (also Eawag/ETH), Prof. Henner Hollert (Goethe University Frankfurt), Prof. Miriam Langer (University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland FHNW/Eawag) and Dr. Cornelia Kienle (Oekotoxzentrum/Centre Ecotox).
On 1 April, Ali will start as a postdoc at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland FHNW in Muttenz. Congratulations, Ali! We wish you continued success.
