Risk assessment of fungi is important
Freshwater fungi play an important role in surface waters in the degradation of leaf litter and as a food source for small invertebrates - and can be impacted by fungicides in environmental concentrations. However, these negative effects are not taken into account in the authorization of fungicides. A new Ecotox Centre publication describes the various functions of freshwater fungi and gives an overview of the side effects of fungicides on these organisms. Freshwater fungi should be considered in the risk assessment of fungicides. This requires the further development and standardisation of various fungal bioassays.
