PFAS in sediments near a fire training area in Lausanne

Perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are often contained in fire-fighting foams and can be released into the environment during fire-fighting exercises. The Ecotox Centre was therefore commissioned by the City of Lausanne to investigate whether the sediments in two rivers, Talent and Tioleire, downstream of a fire training area in Lausanne are contaminated with PFAS. The chemical analyses showed that the sediments downstream were more contaminated with PFAS than upstream, especially in the Tioleire. Both the bioassays and the risk assessment indicate a significant risk for the sediment organisms in this river. There is also a risk of secondary poisoning of aquatic organisms through the consumption of sediment organisms.
