Info sheet on mercury
Mercury is a highly toxic heavy metal that naturally occurs in the environment, but also is released by humans. It poses a health risk to humans, mostly due to its accumulation in fish and shellfish. Mercury is transported over large areas and poses a global problem. This is why the Minamata Convention on the protection of human health and the environment from the negative effects of mercury came into force in 2017. A new info sheet provides information on the presence of mercury, its toxicity and the legal situation.
