Ecotoxicity of munitions contaminated soil

Ecotoxicity of munitions contaminated soil

In areas used for military purposes, the soil can be contaminated with munitions and explosives, resulting in contaminated sites with potential impacts on the environment. The current regulations for contaminated soils only cover a fraction of possible pollutants and do not take into account that these are often present in complex mixtures. In a new project, the Ecotox Centre will therefore chemically characterise the most important pollutants in munitions-contaminated soils and determine their ecotoxicity. In this way, the risk for different land uses can be determined and protection and/or remediation targets can be set.
