Abstract: One Health is an integrative approach that recognises the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental health. By recognising the complex interactions between these areas, One Health aims to improve disease prevention, promote sustainability and improve overall health outcomes. Part of this approach is the concept of ‘one substance - one assessment’, which advocates a harmonised assessment of chemicals and pollutants across all sectors. This method ensures that the effects of substances on human health, ecosystems and animal welfare are comprehensively assessed, leading to more effective regulations and measures. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and data sharing, One Health provides a holistic framework to address global health challenges in a synergistic and sustainable way.

Dr Ellen Fritsche is Director of the Swiss Centre for Applied Human Toxicology (SCAHT) in Basel and Titular Professor at the University of Basel. For the last >10 years she has been a university professor at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, and head of the working group ‘Alternative Method Development for Environmental Toxicity Tests’ at the IUF - Leibniz Institute for Environmental Medical Research. As part of this, she established in vitro test methods for regulatory testing for developmental neurotoxicity (DNT), which are now recommended by the OECD. She is a trained medical doctor and habilitated in the field of environmental toxicology. She coordinated the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) project for the application of a DNT in vitro battery for regulatory purposes. She is involved in the European projects ENDpoiNTs, ONTOX, PARC and CHIASMA, a member of the German MAK Commission (health hazards of chemical compounds in the workplace) and of OECD expert groups.
